Where can I use my card?
You can use your Flex card at approved retail stores in your area or through our online marketplace at bcbsazflex.com. Popular approved retailers include Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, Target, Safeway, Fry's, Albertsons, and many more. To find approved stores near you, log in to your member portal and use the store locator tool, or submit a request and we'll look it up for you. Your card also works with Uber Eats for grocery delivery. Please note that your card can be used anywhere in the U.S. at approved retailers, but cannot be used outside the country.
What items can I buy with my card?
The items you can purchase depend on which wallets (benefit categories) are included in your plan. Your OTC wallet covers eligible health products like vitamins, pain relievers, toothpaste, cough drops, and more -- available at approved retailers or through the online marketplace. If you qualify for the Grocery wallet, you can use it at approved stores for healthy food purchases. Your Health Rewards wallet can be used at most stores with some restrictions. You can check specific product eligibility using the scanner tool in your member portal, by browsing the marketplace directly, or by submitting a request and we'll look it up for you.
Why was my card declined at the store?
There are a few common reasons your card may be declined: the item may not be eligible under your benefit, the store may not be in our approved retailer network, or your balance may not be enough to cover the purchase. Also, if you have non-eligible items mixed in with eligible ones, try separating them into two transactions. If you're shopping at Walmart, their system may ask for a PIN first - you can press Cancel to bypass it and continue checking out as credit. If your card was declined and you're not sure why, submit a request and we can look up the transaction to find out exactly what happened.
Why did my purchase only partially go through?
This usually happens when some items in your transaction are eligible under your benefit and others are not. When a store's system allows partial authorization, it will approve the eligible items and decline the rest. To avoid this, we recommend separating your eligible benefit items from any non-eligible items and running them as two separate transactions. If you're unsure which items are eligible, you can use the product scanner in your member portal or submit a request before you shop and we'll check for you.
Do I need a PIN to use my card?
No - you do not need a PIN to use your Flex card. Simply run your transaction as "credit" at checkout and it will process without a PIN. Setting up a PIN is optional and only needed if you'd like to shop at Costco, which requires PIN-based transactions. If a store's payment terminal asks for a PIN and you haven't set one up, you can press Cancel to bypass it and continue as credit.
How do I set up or reset my PIN?
If you'd like to set up a PIN (optional - only needed for shopping at Costco), call the activation line at 888-454-1423. Keep in mind that if you enter an incorrect PIN three or more times at a store, your PIN will be locked for 24 hours. If that happens, you can still use your card by running the transaction as "credit" instead. If you need help, give us a call at 888-454-1423.
Does my Flex card cover dental or vision?
No, your BCBS-AZ Health Choice Pathway Flex card is specifically for OTC health products, grocery (for qualifying members), and Health Rewards purchases. It does not cover dental, vision, or other medical benefits. If you have questions about dental or vision coverage, please call the number on the back of your BCBS insurance ID card to speak with your health plan directly.
Why are certain items not covered?
Your card only works for items that are approved under your specific wallet and benefit plan. Each wallet has its own list of eligible products - for example, the OTC wallet covers health items like vitamins and first-aid supplies, while the Grocery wallet covers approved healthy foods. Items that fall outside these categories (such as alcohol, tobacco, or non-health-related products) are not eligible. Product eligibility can also vary by store. If you believe an item should be covered and it was declined, submit a support request, and we can look into it.
Is this the same card I had last year?
If you had a Flex card in a prior year, your 2026 card is a new card and your old card will no longer work. Your new card was mailed to you automatically - please make sure you're using the current year's card for all purchases. There have also been changes to the benefit structure for 2026, including how wallets are organized and the amounts available. If you're noticing differences from last year, that's expected.
